Cookie policy
Last updated 26 October 2026
Promo Magpie uses a few cookies the site needs to work, and Google Analytics cookies to count visits so we can see which pages help people and improve the rest. We don't use advertising cookies, and you can turn analytics off at any time.
Cookies the site needs
| Cookie | What it does | Lasts |
|---|---|---|
voucher-magpie-session | Keeps the site working between pages, for example remembering a message after you submit a form | 120 minutes |
XSRF-TOKEN | Security: stops other websites submitting forms on your behalf | 120 minutes |
vm_charity | Remembers the charity you picked, so your clicks count for it. Only set when you choose one | 1 year, or until you change it |
Analytics cookies
We use Google Analytics to count visits and see how people use the site: which pages they read, where they came from and what device they use. It tells us what's useful, not who you are. We've switched off Google's advertising features (Google signals and ad personalization), so this data isn't used to show you ads. If your browser sends the Global Privacy Control signal, analytics doesn't load at all.
| Cookie | What it does | Lasts |
|---|---|---|
_ga | Google Analytics: tells visits from the same browser apart, so we count visitors, not just page views | 2 years |
_ga_* | Google Analytics: keeps track of the current visit | 2 years |
Turn analytics off: this stops Google Analytics on this device and deletes its cookies. It's remembered in your browser, so do it once per browser.
We also save small settings in your browser's local storage, not as cookies: that you've seen the cookie notice, whether you've turned analytics off, and whether you skipped choosing a charity. They never leave your device.
Cloudflare
Cloudflare protects the site from attacks and bots. If it needs to check a visit, it may set a security cookie such as __cf_bm (30 minutes) or cf_clearance. These are strictly necessary and don't track you across sites.
Affiliate cookies, when you click through to a store
This is how Promo Magpie earns money, and how your charity gets its share. When you click Get code, Get deal or Visit store, the link goes briefly through the store's affiliate network before you land on the store's site. The network sets a cookie on its own domain (not ours), and the store may set one too. It records that you came from Promo Magpie, so if you buy something the store pays us a commission. It doesn't change your price.
These cookies are only set when you click through to a store, never just by visiting Promo Magpie. They usually last 7 to 30 days, depending on the store. The networks we work with are:
- Awin (awin1.com)
- CJ (Commission Junction: anrdoezrs.net, jdoqocy.com, tkqlhce.com, dpbolvw.net, kqzyfj.com)
- Partnerize (prf.hn)
- Rakuten Advertising (linksynergy.com)
- Paid On Results (paidonresults.net)
- Impact, Tradedoubler, Webgains, Adtraction, Daisycon and Skimlinks, for some stores
Each network and store has its own cookie and privacy policy, and you'll be asked about their cookies on their sites. Blocking third-party cookies or using private browsing can stop a purchase being tracked, which means no commission is paid and nothing is donated.
Turning cookies off in your browser
You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. If you block the cookies the site needs, forms on this site may not work.
