Privacy policy

This policy explains what personal information Promo Magpie collects, why, who we share it with, and the rights you have over it, including under the California Consumer Privacy Act (as amended by the CPRA) and other state privacy laws.

What we collect and why

In the categories California law uses, these are identifiers (email, IP address), internet activity (pages visited, clicks) and, if you choose a charity, your preferences. We collect them from you and your browser.

We don't sell or share your personal information

We don't sell your personal information, and we don't "share" it for cross-context behavioral advertising, as California law defines those terms. We don't use it to build advertising profiles. We honor the Global Privacy Control signal: if your browser sends it, we treat it as a request to opt out, and we turn off analytics for that browser.

Who we share it with

Only with service providers that help us run the site, under contracts that limit what they can do with it:

• Our hosting provider, which runs the servers the site lives on.
• Cloudflare, which protects and speeds up the site and processes requests on our behalf.
• Google Analytics, which counts visits and shows us how the site is used, through cookies. Google's advertising features are switched off, and you can turn analytics off at any time.
• Google Fonts, which serves the site's fonts. Your browser connects to Google to download them, which shares your IP address with Google.
• Our email provider, if you sign up to The Thursday email, to send it to you.
• Affiliate networks such as Awin and CJ, when you click a link to a store. They use their own cookies under their own privacy policies.

We're based in the United Kingdom, so your information is processed there and by our providers in the United States and elsewhere. We may also disclose information if the law requires it.

Browser extension

The Promo Magpie extension for Chrome, Edge and Firefox shows our codes, deals, price drops and articles for the store you're on. It's built so your browsing stays private:

• It downloads our list of stores a few times a day and checks the sites you visit against it on your device. The addresses of the sites you visit are never sent to us or anyone else.
• When you open the extension on a store we list, it asks us for that one store's codes and deals. That request includes the store's name, not the page you were on.
• The charity you choose is saved in your browser. It's added to the link only when you click through to a store, so the donation goes to the right place.
• It never changes a page, and it never adds an affiliate link or cookie unless you click a code, a deal or "Shop and support" in the extension.
• If you're signed in on our website, the extension asks us who you are, so it can show what you've raised and your account's charity. If you're not signed in, it doesn't know who you are.
• It doesn't use analytics, and it doesn't collect your browsing history.

Your rights

Depending on where you live (including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia and other states with privacy laws), you have the right to know what personal information we hold about you and get a copy, to have it corrected, to have it deleted, and to opt out of its sale or sharing (we don't do either). We won't treat you differently for using these rights. Every email has a one-click unsubscribe link.

To make a request, email [email protected]. We'll confirm the request comes from you (usually by replying to the email address we hold), and answer within 45 days. You can use an authorized agent to make a request for you. If we turn down your request, you can appeal by replying to our answer, and if you're still not satisfied you can contact your state attorney general.

Children

The site isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their personal information. If you think a child has given us their details, email us and we'll delete them.

Security

We use encryption in transit, hash IP addresses, and limit who can see personal information. No system is perfectly secure, and we'll tell you and the authorities if a breach affects you, as the law requires.
