About Feeding America
Feeding America is a nationwide network of food banks based in Chicago. Food banking began in the late 1960s, when John van Hengel started storing donated food for people in need, and the national organization was founded in 1979. It was known as America's Second Harvest until 2008, when it took its current name.
It works with farmers, manufacturers and retailers to rescue food that would otherwise go to waste, and its network rescued 4.3 billion pounds of food and groceries last year. Over 250 member food banks store that food and pass it to tens of thousands of local pantries and meal programs, which together provided 5.9 billion meals. It also helps people apply for SNAP, runs programs for children and older adults, responds to disasters and studies local food insecurity through its Map the Meal Gap research.
