About Habitat for Humanity International
Habitat for Humanity is a global nonprofit housing organization founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller. Its vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live, and it works in all 50 U.S. states and in about 70 countries. Its operational headquarters are in Americus, Georgia.
Much of the work is done by local affiliates, which are independent nonprofits that follow the Habitat mission. Families selected by an affiliate put in hundreds of hours of their own labor, called sweat equity, building alongside volunteers, and then buy the home with an affordable mortgage. It also repairs homes, advocates for housing policy, and runs ReStores, which sell donated furniture and building materials to fund local housing work.
