About ASPCA
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) was founded in New York City in 1866 by Henry Bergh, and describes itself as the first animal welfare organization in North America. Bergh won a charter from the New York State Legislature and campaigned for stronger anti-cruelty laws and better treatment of working horses.
Today the ASPCA works nationwide, largely by supporting and training local shelters, rescue groups and law enforcement rather than running shelters everywhere itself. It investigates cruelty and rescues animals, responds to disasters, runs adoption and behavioral rehabilitation programs, and provides veterinary care. It has local services in New York City, Los Angeles, Miami, Asheville and Oklahoma City, runs the Animal Poison Control Center, gives grants to other animal welfare groups and advocates for animal protection laws.
