About American Red Cross
The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization founded by Clara Barton in 1881 in Dansville, New York. It received a congressional charter in 1905 and is headquartered in Washington, D.C. It is part of the global Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
Most of its work is carried out by volunteers. When a disaster strikes, from a house fire to a hurricane, it provides shelter, meals, emotional support and help with recovery, and it responds to tens of thousands of disasters a year. It collects roughly 40% of the nation's donated blood and supplies it to hospitals. It also passes emergency messages between service members and their families, teaches first aid and CPR, and works with Red Cross societies abroad on disaster preparedness and reconnecting separated families.
