About American Cancer Society
The American Cancer Society is a national nonprofit working to reduce the toll of cancer through research, patient support and advocacy. It was founded in New York City in 1913 by 10 doctors and five laypeople as the American Society for the Control of Cancer, and took its current name in 1945.
The Society funds cancer research grants and runs its own population studies, such as the Cancer Prevention Study-3, and publishes cancer facts and statistics. For patients and caregivers, it runs a helpline that answers calls around the clock, the Road to Recovery program of free rides to treatment, and Hope Lodge, which offers free places to stay when treatment is far from home. It also works on public policy, and its history includes advocacy that helped lead to the National Cancer Act of 1971.
