About IMPROV
IMPROV runs online driving courses across the US. It started in 1980, when entrepreneur Gary Alexander and Budd Friedman, owner of the Hollywood Improv comedy club, began running traffic school classes at the club. The company behind it, Interactive Education Concepts Inc., was set up in 1994 and launched its first fully online course in 2008. It says it has trained more than 5 million drivers.
Courses are sold state by state. The main types are defensive driving courses (popular in New York, New Jersey, Arizona and Georgia), traffic school for ticket dismissal or point reduction (such as California traffic school and the Florida driver improvement course), insurance discount courses, driver's education and pre-licensing courses, and fleet training for employers. The material is written by comedy writers and built with input from driver-behaviour psychologists, with videos and quizzes.
It suits US drivers who have been told to take a course by a court, DMV, employer or insurer, or who want a premium discount where their state allows it. You can work at your own pace on a computer or phone, and the certificate can arrive within 30 minutes of finishing. IMPROV advises checking with the court, DMV or insurer that the course will count before you start. Prices are in US dollars and vary by state.
