Carmel Car & Limousine Service has been driving New Yorkers since 1978, and many locals will remember its phone number from the radio jingle. It's best known for airport runs between Manhattan and JFK, LaGuardia and Newark. It also books cars in more than 350 cities worldwide through affiliated providers, and handles weddings, proms, theater nights and group events. It suits travelers who'd rather know the fare before they get in than gamble on surge pricing.

The rates page lists flat prices by vehicle and route. Tolls and gratuities aren't included, there's a $5 extra charge for pickups above 125th Street, and peak-hour prices can vary.

What's worth a look

Here are six ways to ride with Carmel, with fares from its own rate card where it lists them.

For one to three passengers, a Full Size Sedan from Manhattan costs $49 to LaGuardia, $64 to JFK and $62 to Newark. Coming back costs a little less: $46 from LaGuardia, $61 from JFK and $59 from Newark. If you've got more people or more luggage, an SUV for up to six is $99 from Manhattan to JFK, and a Stretch Limo for up to seven is $207 on the same run.

For bigger groups, the fleet runs up to a 40-passenger bus, and Carmel has a dedicated events department for weddings, corporate outings and road shows. The special occasions page covers wedding, prom and theater bookings, including one-way, round-trip and by-the-hour options for a night out on Broadway.

Outside New York, the home page lists special airport prices in other cities, including Toronto Pearson, Montreal, Vancouver, Paris Charles de Gaulle and Orly, London Heathrow, Gatwick and City, and Bangkok and Phuket, so it's worth checking if you need a transfer on the other end of a trip. You can also open an account, get receipts online and report lost property through the website.

Current offers

Download the Carmel app and you get $36 in Car Cash, which works as $6 off each of six trips. Separately, Carmel Points pays you back for riding: once a completed trip is paid for, you earn from 1 point per dollar on base fares under $100 up to 6 points per dollar on fares of $500 or more, and you can convert the points into Car Cash for future rides. Points are only earned on rides booked through a Carmel website account or the app, and they can take up to eight weeks to show up.

How to save more

• Book through the app or a website account rather than by phone, so the ride earns Carmel Points and you can use the $36 app Car Cash.
• Pick the right vehicle for your group. A Minivan for up to six costs $79 from Manhattan to JFK, against $99 for an SUV, if you don't need the extra space.
• Points are based on the base fare only, not tolls or tips. Grouping trips on one account builds your balance faster than splitting them across family members.
