House of Blanks is the factory brand of Roopa Knitting Mills in Toronto, and it sells plain, unbranded basics: T-shirts in several weights and fits, fleece hoodies, zip sweatshirts, crewnecks, sweatpants, shorts and beanies. Nothing carries a big logo, which is why the clothes are popular with people who print their own designs and with anyone who just wants a well-made plain tee. Wholesale blanks and custom distressed dyeing are also offered.

US shoppers see prices in US dollars, but orders ship from Canada. The shipping policy says some products currently carry a 50% US import duty, and every item we checked had a notice under the price saying so. The carrier collects this duty plus its own fees on delivery. House of Blanks doesn't charge it, so it isn't in the price you see. If the duty isn't paid, the parcel is abandoned and the policy says you won't get a refund. Count the duty in before you decide.

What's worth a look

Here are six staples across the weights and fits, at today's US prices, before any import duty.

The T-shirts are listed by fabric weight. The 1009 Heavyweight T-shirt is 275 GSM jersey at $35, and the 1008 Midweight is 200 GSM at $30. The newer 1018 Supima cotton tee is the lightest at 170 GSM and costs $45. If you like a wider, boxier shape, the 1016 Oversized uses the same 275 GSM fabric as the heavyweight. For colder weather, the 3013 Relaxed Fleece Pullover is $110 and the full-zip hoodie is $115.

There's also a recycled cotton collection and a pigment dyed range with a washed, vintage look. The recycled pieces use a blend of recycled cotton, cotton from sustainable farming programs and organic cotton. The Supima tees use traceable American-grown cotton. Every piece is plain, so if you are printing or embroidering your own designs, the same blank can be reordered in several colors without a logo getting in the way.

How to save more

• Buy tees in threes to get the 10% multi-buy discount. Three heavyweights come to $105 before the discount. Add a hoodie to pass the $150 free-shipping line.
• Work out the duty before you order. At 50% on the product value, a $150 order could bring a duty bill of around $75 plus carrier fees at your door. Bigger, less frequent orders at least keep the carrier's handling fees down.
• Use the size guide before you order. Returns crossing the border are slower, and the policy says brokerage fees aren't included in the return shipping cost.
