Holiday returns 2026: the big stores' deadlines, and why there's no federal right to return

Amazon, Walmart and Target have set their 2026 holiday return windows. Here are the dates, the exceptions, and what the law does and doesn't promise when a gift just isn't right.

What's happened

The big retailers have started publishing their extended holiday return windows for 2026, and most of them run into late January 2027.

Target's holiday policy covers qualifying purchases made from November 1 to December 24, 2026. The return clock starts on December 26, so most electronics and entertainment items can go back until January 24, 2027, and Apple, Beats and mobile phones until January 8, 2027.

Amazon told sellers on October 16, 2026 that most items bought on Amazon.com between November 1 and December 31, 2026 can be returned until January 31, 2027, with Apple products due back by January 15, 2027. Amazon said the policy will now apply every year, according to a report of its seller notice.

Walmart says most items bought from October 1 through December 31, 2026 can be returned through January 31, 2027, as reported on September 30. It lists exceptions including wireless phones, protection plans, major appliances, Dyson products and some seasonal and luxury goods, and Marketplace sellers can set their own rules.

Who's affected

Anyone shopping early for the holidays, and anyone receiving gifts. The key point is that these are store policies, not legal rights. There's no federal law that makes a store take back an item just because you changed your mind or the size is wrong. The FTC's advice is simply that return policies vary, are often printed on the receipt, and that many stores won't accept returns after a set period such as 30 or 90 days.

Some states add rules. In New York, for example, stores and online retailers must clearly display their refund policy. If they don't, a buyer can return unused, undamaged goods within 30 days of purchase for a cash refund or credit, with proof of purchase. Check your state attorney general's website for the rules where you live.

Best Buy's return policy page, checked on October 26, 2026, showed its standard terms: 15 days for most products, 60 days for My Best Buy Plus and Total members, and 14 days for phones and other activatable devices. It charges a 15% restocking fee on some opened items, including drones, cameras, lenses and projectors, and $45 on opened activatable devices, except in states where that's not allowed.

A worked example

This is an illustration, not a real case.

Dana buys a $180 pair of headphones on Amazon on November 27 and a $60 sweater at Target the same day. Under Amazon's holiday policy, the headphones can go back until January 31, 2027, not 30 days after delivery. At Target, the sweater falls under the normal 90-day window for unopened items in new condition, so it's covered until late February. If Dana had bought Apple AirPods at Target instead, the deadline would be January 8, 2027.

If the headphones simply stop working in February, that's a different question. A faulty product may still be covered by the manufacturer's warranty, or by your state's implied warranty rules, even after the return window closes.

What to do now

  1. Ask for a gift receipt at checkout, and keep your own receipt or order confirmation.
  2. Check the exceptions before you buy phones, appliances, Apple products or anything from a Marketplace seller.
  3. Keep the packaging and tags on anything you might return. Opened items can carry restocking fees.
  4. Know the Cooling-Off Rule. If you buy something in your home for $25 or more, or at a temporary location such as a hotel or fair for $130 or more, the FTC's rule gives you until midnight of the third business day to cancel for a full refund.
  5. Contact the manufacturer if a defective item is past the store's deadline.

FAQs

Does a store have to give me cash back?

Not under federal law. Many stores give a refund to the original payment method, but some offer only store credit or an exchange, especially without a receipt. The posted policy decides.

Can I return something I bought online at a physical store?

Often, but it depends on the retailer. Marketplace or third-party seller items usually follow the seller's own policy.

Does the Cooling-Off Rule cover online orders?

No. The FTC says sales made entirely online, by mail or by phone aren't covered, nor are sales at a seller's permanent store.
