CardCash is an online marketplace for gift cards, based in Brick, New Jersey. Elliot Bohm and Marc Ackerman started it in 2009 after a holiday season left them holding gift cards they didn't need, and it has grown into one of the better-known places in the US to swap unwanted cards for cash or pick up cards for less than their face value. In 2014 it bought its Silicon Valley rival Plastic Jungle, and in January 2024 it was acquired by RDE, the company behind Restaurant.com, which now trades as Giftify.
The idea is simple. People sell gift cards they won't use, and CardCash resells them at a discount, so you can buy a card for a store, restaurant, gas station or travel brand for less than the balance on it. Many cards come as eGift cards delivered by email, and physical cards are posted. The discount varies from brand to brand and changes with supply, so the same card can be cheaper one week than the next.
It suits planned spending: if you already know you'll shop at a particular store or fill up at a particular gas station, buying a discounted card first takes a slice off the bill. You can also sell or trade cards you don't want.
