Thanksgiving Day 2026: which big stores are closed, and when Black Friday doors open

What's confirmed so far

Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, 2026, and Black Friday is November 27. Most of the biggest US chains have now said their stores will be closed on Thanksgiving Day. Their online deals keep running. We've only listed stores that have confirmed their 2026 plans on their own websites or in press releases, when we checked on November 1.

Store by store

Walmart. On October 7, Walmart said: "Stores will be closed again on Thanksgiving and Christmas this year." Its Black Friday Deals event runs November 23 to 29. It starts on Walmart.com at 12:01 a.m. ET on November 23, with Walmart+ members getting early access, and in stores at 6 a.m. local time on November 27. Cyber Monday deals run online from November 30 to December 2.

Costco. Costco's website says: "In observance of Thanksgiving, Costco will be closed Thursday, Nov. 26, 2026." Its Black Friday savings run November 27 to 30. Costco hasn't posted special Black Friday opening times, so check your warehouse's page.

Best Buy. Best Buy's October 27 holiday calendar says stores will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, but you can shop in its app and on BestBuy.com. Its 10 days of Black Friday doorbusters and deals start November 19. Extended store hours began November 1, and Best Buy says to check your local store page for times. Most purchases made from October 30 to December 31 can be returned until January 15, 2027.

Home Depot. Home Depot's 2026 holiday hours list Thanksgiving as closed and Black Friday opening at 6 a.m. Its Black Friday Savings Event runs November 5 to 25.

Lowe's. Lowe's said on October 8 that its stores "will remain closed on Thanksgiving Day," with online-only deals available. Black Friday Doorbusters open to everyone on November 27, with MyLowe's Rewards members getting early online access the day before. Lowe's didn't give Black Friday opening times.

Dick's Sporting Goods. Dick's said on October 15 that all its US stores and distribution centers will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, and reopen on Black Friday. You can still shop online at dicks.com and footlocker.com that day. It didn't give opening times.

Target and Kohl's. Both have closed on Thanksgiving in recent years, but neither had published 2026 hours on its own site when we checked. Target's early Black Friday deals run November 5 to 7, with a new Deal of the Day every day through December 24.

A worked example

This is an illustration, not a real case.

Alex wants a TV and a pair of headphones and doesn't want to queue on Friday morning. Best Buy's Black Friday deals start November 19, and its stores are closed on Thanksgiving, so Alex can compare prices online over that week. If Alex buys on November 19 and the price drops on Black Friday, Best Buy's holiday return window, to January 15, 2027, gives time to return and rebuy, as long as the item qualifies.

1. Check your local store page before you go. Hours vary by location.
2. Sign up for free memberships where early access needs one, such as MyLowe's Rewards.
3. Note the online start times, like Walmart.com at 12:01 a.m. ET.
4. Check holiday return windows so you can rebuy if prices drop.
5. Recheck Target and Kohl's nearer the date for confirmed hours.

We didn't find 2026 confirmations from the big grocery chains when we checked. Hours vary by chain and location, so check your store's page or app before you go.

Can I still shop online on Thanksgiving?

Yes. Walmart, Best Buy, Lowe's and Dick's all point shoppers to their websites and apps that day.

When does Cyber Monday start?

Cyber Monday is November 30. Walmart's Cyber Monday deals run on Walmart.com from 12:01 a.m. ET on November 30 to December 2, and Best Buy's Cyber Week deals run December 1 to 6.
