Shipping a holiday gift box: USPS vs UPS vs FedEx, and the 2026 peak surcharges

USPS sends our 5 lb gift box from $13.75, or $27.45 coast to coast. UPS and FedEx add holiday surcharges of up to 80 cents, on top of residential and fuel charges. Here's how the three compare.

If you're sending gifts this year, the carrier you pick can matter as much as the box. USPS, UPS and FedEx all add holiday charges from late October into January, but in different ways. USPS raises its prices outright, while UPS and FedEx add a per-package peak surcharge on top of residential and fuel surcharges that apply all year.

We've compared what it costs to send the same gift box, a 5 lb box measuring 12 by 10 by 8 inches, a short distance and across the country. USPS prices come from its own retail price list. UPS and FedEx block their rate guides and calculators to our checker, so their figures come from rate analyses and trade press, named below. Everything was checked on October 27, 2026. Get a quote on each carrier's website, or at the counter, before you pay.

At a glance

  • Cheapest for our box nearby: USPS Ground Advantage, $13.75 at the counter for the closest zone.
  • Cheapest across the country: USPS Ground Advantage, $27.45 from coast to coast, against $39 for Priority Mail.
  • Holiday surcharges: UPS adds up to $0.75 a home-delivered Ground package, and FedEx up to $0.80. USPS's increases are built into its prices.
  • The hidden costs: UPS and FedEx add a residential surcharge of around $6.50 to $6.95, plus a fuel surcharge of about 29% when we checked. USPS has neither.
  • Box size matters: UPS and FedEx charge our box as if it weighed 7 lb because of its size. USPS charges its real weight.

USPS prices for a 5 lb package from its retail price list effective October 4, 2026, which includes its holiday increases. UPS and FedEx surcharges as reported by the sources listed at the end.

USPS

USPS's retail prices already include its temporary holiday increases, which run from October 4, 2026 to January 17, 2027. For our 5 lb box, Ground Advantage costs $13.75 to the nearest zone, rising to $27.45 coast to coast, for example from New York to Los Angeles. Priority Mail is faster, usually 2 to 3 days, and costs $15.10 to $39.00. It includes tracking and up to $100 of insurance on most shipments.

USPS only charges by size, known as dimensional weight, on packages over 1 cubic foot (1,728 cubic inches). Our box is 960 cubic inches, so it's charged on its actual 5 lb. There's no residential or fuel surcharge.

Flat Rate boxes can be cheaper for heavy items going a long way. A Medium Flat Rate Box costs $25.80 and a Large $36.10 at the counter, whatever the weight up to 70 lb. Our 12 by 10 by 8 inch box is too big for either, though, so Flat Rate suits smaller, denser gifts.

UPS

UPS raised its rates by an average of 5.9% from December 22, 2025. For the holidays it's added a demand surcharge to Ground Residential and Ground Saver packages, according to UPS's announcement as reported by Reveel:

  • October 25 to November 21, 2026: $0.50 a package
  • November 22 to December 26, 2026: $0.75 a package
  • December 27, 2026 to January 16, 2027: $0.50 a package

Last year's charges were $0.40 and $0.60. On top of that, UPS charges a residential surcharge for home delivery, reported at about $6.50, and a fuel surcharge that was 29.5% on Ground for the week of October 26.

The bigger catch for gift boxes is dimensional weight. Rate analyses report that UPS and FedEx divide a package's size in cubic inches by 139 on their standard rates, with no minimum size. Our box works out at 6.9, so it's billed as 7 lb even though it weighs 5. A smaller box, or less packing material, can lower the price.

FedEx

FedEx also raised its rates by an average of 5.9%, from January 5, 2026, and has announced another 5.9% for January 4, 2027. Supply Chain Dive reported that its holiday demand surcharge on Ground Residential and Home Delivery packages is $0.50 to $0.80 a package, from October 26, 2026 to January 17, 2027, up from a top rate of $0.65 last year. Its residential surcharge is $6.95, and its Ground fuel surcharge was 29% for the week of October 26. A separate, much larger residential peak charge applies only to businesses shipping in big volumes, not to people sending gifts.

Christmas ship-by dates

For delivery by December 24, FedEx's published dates, as reported by ShipStation and Value Added Resource, are December 15 for Ground Economy, December 17 to 23 for Ground and Home Delivery depending on how many days in transit, December 21 for Express Saver, December 22 for 2Day and December 23 for overnight services. UPS's dates for its air services are December 21 for 3 Day Select, December 22 for 2nd Day Air and December 23 for Next Day Air. For UPS Ground, check the transit time for your ZIP Codes on its website. USPS recommends sending Ground Advantage by December 17 and Priority Mail by December 18 within the lower 48 states.

Where each wins and falls short

  • USPS is usually cheapest for light and medium gifts sent to a home, with no residential or fuel surcharges, free boxes for Priority Mail and free pickup. But its holiday increases are already in its prices, and coast-to-coast Priority Mail is dear.
  • UPS has stores and drop-off points in CVS, Michaels, Advance Auto Parts and Staples. But residential and fuel surcharges add a lot to small home deliveries.
  • FedEx has the widest choice of drop-off points, including FedEx Office, Walgreens, Dollar General and Office Depot, and clear ship-by dates for every service. But it has the highest residential surcharge of the three.

Tips to pay less

  1. Use the smallest box that fits. At UPS and FedEx, size can cost you more than weight.
  2. Get quotes online. Prices bought online can differ from counter prices, and printing your own label saves time in line.
  3. Try a Flat Rate box for heavy gifts. If it fits, a Flat Rate box can beat paying by weight, especially across the country.
  4. Order free supplies early. USPS sends free Priority Mail boxes with your regular mail, usually within 7 to 10 days.
  5. Ship from the store. Buying online and sending straight to the recipient often means free shipping.

Your questions answered

Which carrier is cheapest for a holiday gift?

For most boxes under about 10 lb going to a home, USPS Ground Advantage is usually the cheapest, because UPS and FedEx add residential and fuel surcharges. For big, heavy boxes, get quotes from all three.

Does USPS charge extra for delivering to a home?

No. USPS has no residential or fuel surcharge, and its holiday increases are already in the prices it shows, so the price you're quoted is the price you pay, plus any extras such as more insurance.
