Blackview: rugged phones with thermal cameras, big batteries and more

Blackview is a Hong Kong electronics maker best known for rugged Android phones: chunky, drop-resistant handsets with huge batteries, built-in flashlights, night-vision cameras and, on some models, FLIR or other thermal imaging cameras. Its official store also sells tablets, smartwatches, earbuds, mini PCs, projectors and a kids' motion-game console. It suits people who work outdoors, on job sites or in workshops, campers and hikers, and anyone who's tired of cracking a slim flagship phone.

The store ships from Hong Kong to most countries. When you browse from the US, prices show in US dollars. Standard registered airmail is free on parcels under 2kg and takes about 7 to 20 business days, while DHL or FedEx express costs US$40 and takes 5 to 7 business days after the order is processed. Blackview says import taxes are the buyer's responsibility, so check before you order an expensive phone.

What's worth a look

All six of these were in stock for US delivery when we checked, and each was showing a sale price below its regular price.

The FORT 5 is the slim option in the rugged range, with wireless charging and a 108MP camera, at $356.99. If a thermal camera is the point, the ROCK 3 is $407.99. The XPLORE models add a second small display on the back and very large 20000mAh batteries, and the new XPLORE 6 is listed as a pre-order. The PlayPop 8 is the odd one out: a motion-game box for kids and families rather than a phone.

A few things to know before you buy. Rugged phones are heavy, so check the weight on the spec sheet if you're used to a slim handset. Phones are sold with a plug to suit your country (the US pages list a USA plug), and the store sells chargers, magnetic keyboards for its tablets and leather cases separately. Because orders leave from Hong Kong, allow for the processing time of 2 to 7 business days on top of delivery, and choose DHL or FedEx if you need the phone for a trip. There's also a user manual library and help center on the site if you're comparing features across models.

Current offers

Our current Blackview offer is free worldwide shipping, which matches the store's own banner: standard airmail is free on orders under 2kg. On top of that, the store is running sale prices across much of the range, with the products above showing roughly 18% to 32% off their regular prices. There's also a Flash Sale section in the menu and a rewards program.

How to save more

• Check stock in your country before you set your heart on a model. Several popular items, including the Active 7 tablet and BL9000 Pro, showed as sold out for US delivery when we looked, even though they had prices on the page.
• Pick the cheapest memory option that suits you. Phones like the XPLORE 1 come in 12+256GB and 16+512GB versions at different prices.
• The return window for change-of-mind returns is 14 days from delivery, so test the phone straight away, and note that refunds to cards can take up to 30 days to appear.
