Doft New York is a small skincare line created by Dr. Melissa Doft, a double board-certified plastic surgeon with a practice at 755 Park Avenue in Manhattan. Most brands sell dozens of products. This one sells four formulas, made to be used on their own or layered as a routine. It's a luxury purchase, priced between $250 and $325 a bottle, so it suits people who already have a skincare routine and want to add one targeted step.

What's worth a look

vitamin is the morning step, an antioxidant serum with two forms of vitamin C plus vitamins B and E, niacinamide and peptides, aimed at radiance and evenness. serum seven targets the look of dark spots with tranexamic acid, kojic acid, arbutin and AHAs. strategy is the evening retinol serum, and morpheus is an overnight repair mask with peptides and enzymes.

The brand's own instructions say several of the formulas can tingle because of their high active levels. They aren't recommended for very sensitive skin, and serum seven and strategy may increase sun sensitivity, so daily sunscreen is part of the deal. The brand lays out the full routine on The Prescription page. vitamin goes on in the morning to defend, serum seven morning and evening to correct, strategy in the evening to renew, and morpheus last, twice a day after your serums. You apply a pea-sized amount of each serum to the face and neck. Payment is by American Express, Discover, MasterCard or Visa, and orders usually take two business days to fulfill, a little longer around the holidays. You can cancel for a full refund at any point before your order ships.

How to save more

• Start with one formula. The brand itself says you don't need a whole new routine. Pick the one that matches your main concern, and only buy the system if you'd end up with three or four of them anyway.
• Budget for shipping. US orders pay a flat $9. International shipping is available, with the rate shown at checkout.
