WiTopia is a privacy company with two main products: SecureMyEmail, which adds encryption to the email address you already have, and personalVPN, a VPN service with apps for computers and phones. It also sells CloakBox, a router that comes set up with the VPN so every device in a home or small office is covered. Plans are priced per user, in US dollars, and work for personal or business use.

It suits people who handle sensitive information over email, small businesses looking for HIPAA- or GDPR-friendly email, and anyone who wants a VPN without a long sign-up process.

What's worth a look

Here are the plans and products, with prices as shown on WiTopia's pages today.

SecureMyEmail is free forever for a single Gmail, Yahoo or Microsoft consumer address (outlook.com, hotmail.com and so on), with the same features as the paid version. To encrypt any other address, such as a work or custom domain email, the paid plans cost $3.99 a month or $29.99 a year, and both start with a 30-day free trial that doesn't need payment details. For healthcare and other regulated businesses, there are HIPAA and GDPR versions at the same per-user price, and the HIPAA page says a business associate agreement (BAA) is included.

personalVPN costs $9.99 for one month, $47.88 for 12 months or $59.76 for 24 months. After the first two years, the 24-month plan renews at $47.88 a year, and WiTopia says it'll notify you before it renews. Every VPN plan comes with an unconditional 30-day money-back guarantee. The CloakBox router costs $299 with 12 months of service, the larger CloakBox Pro costs $399 with 12 months, and both renew at $99.99 a year. Shipping within the US is free.

SecureMyEmail has apps for Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, and personalVPN has apps on the App Store and Google Play. The standard CloakBox is built on an ASUS AX3000 WiFi 6 router and the Pro on the more powerful ASUS AX5700, and both include round-the-clock support. CloakBox ships free within the US only. WiTopia suggests international buyers use a US reshipping address.

Current offers

Our current WiTopia offer is a 30-day free trial of SecureMyEmail encrypted email, with no payment details needed to start. On top of that, the site lists the 12-month SecureMyEmail plan as a 38% saving over paying monthly, and the 24-month VPN plan as a 75% saving.

How to save more

• Try free before paying. If you only want to encrypt a personal Gmail, Yahoo or Outlook address, the free plan may be all you need.
• Pay yearly once you're sure. SecureMyEmail at $29.99 a year works out at $2.49 a month, against $3.99 on the monthly plan.
• Check the renewal price on routers. CloakBox renews at $99.99 a year after the first term, so compare the 12- and 24-month bundles before you buy.
