What this is
TVs are one of the biggest Black Friday categories, and the 2026 sales have already started. Best Buy says its "DoorBOOster" deals began on October 30, early Black Friday deals start November 6 with new ones every Friday, and its main Black Friday Doorbusters run for 10 days from November 19. Black Friday itself is Friday, November 27.
Adobe, which tracks online sales at US retailers, forecasts that TV discounts will peak at 23% this season, with the best day for TVs being Black Friday. Last year the peak was 24.2%.
At a glance
- Black Friday is November 27. Adobe expects TV discounts to peak that day, at around 23%.
- Check the native refresh rate. Several budget 65-inch sets at Target list 60Hz native, even when the box mentions 120Hz.
- "Mini LED" covers a wide range. Compare the number of dimming zones and HDR formats, not just the label.
- Watch for unfamiliar model numbers. Doorbuster TVs can be versions made for one store, which makes price comparison hard.
- Price protection exists. Best Buy says it will match its own lower price if a product it sells drops during the holiday season.
The specs that matter
Native refresh rate. This is how many times a second the panel actually redraws. On Target's product pages, the Samsung UN65U8000H, the Samsung UN65M70H, the Roku 65-inch Select Series and the TCL 65QM52LR all list a native refresh rate of 60Hz. Several also mention "DLG 120Hz" or similar. Target's Samsung M70H page says that feature raises the refresh rate to up to 120Hz "but will reduce image sharpness." If you play fast games on a newer console or PC, look for 120Hz or higher native.
Backlight and dimming zones. More dimming zones usually means better contrast in dark scenes. Target lists the TCL 65QM52LR with "up to 400+" local dimming zones and the TCL 65QM6K with "up to 500."
HDR formats. Most sets support HDR10 and HDR10+. Dolby Vision is the other main format, used by several streaming services. Of the 65-inch models we checked, only the TCL QM6K listed Dolby Vision.
Ports. Count the HDMI inputs if you have a games console, soundbar and streaming stick. The budget models we looked at have three. The QM6K has four.
Spotting derivative "doorbuster" models
Consumer Reports has long warned about "derivative" TVs: sets similar to mainstream models but with different model numbers and often fewer features, sold for a limited time or through particular retailers. Because the model number only exists at one store, you can't easily compare its price elsewhere or find reviews.
So search the exact model number before you buy. If it only turns up at one store, compare its spec sheet with the nearest mainstream model from the same brand. If the doorbuster loses features, the discount may not be as large as it looks.
A worked example: 65-inch TVs at Target
When we checked Target.com on November 1, 2026, these 65-inch sets were listed:
- Hiro 65-inch 4K Roku TV: $299.99.
- Samsung UN65U8000H (Crystal UHD): $399.99, 60Hz native, direct-lit LED, HDR10+.
- Roku 65-inch Select Series QLED: $399.99, 60Hz native, HDR10+.
- Samsung UN65M70H (Mini LED, 2026 model): $479.99, 60Hz native.
- TCL 65QM52LR (QM5 Mini LED): $479.99, down from $499.99, 60Hz native, up to 400+ dimming zones.
- TCL 65QM6K (QM6K Mini LED): $699.99, 144Hz native, Dolby Vision, up to 500 dimming zones, four HDMI inputs.
Say you're choosing between the TCL QM5 at $479.99 and the QM6K at $699.99. The extra $220 buys a 144Hz native panel, Dolby Vision and a fourth HDMI port. If you keep the set for seven years, that's about $31 a year. Gamers may find that worth it; for news and streaming, the cheaper set may do. These were regular prices on November 1, not Black Friday prices, so they give you a baseline to judge later deals against.
What to do now
- Write down today's prices for the two or three sets you're considering, with model numbers.
- Decide which specs you need: native refresh rate, HDR formats, number of HDMI ports and size.
- Search any doorbuster model number before you buy, and compare its specs with the mainstream model.
- Keep your receipt and watch the price. Best Buy says most purchases made October 30 to December 31 can be returned through January 15, 2027, and it will match its own lower price on products it sells during the holiday season.
Questions
Is Black Friday the best time to buy a TV?
Adobe forecasts that TV discounts will peak on Black Friday this year, at 23%. That's an average across retailers, so individual deals will vary.
What does "120Hz" on the box mean if the spec sheet says 60Hz?
Features such as DLG process the picture to raise the refresh rate. They aren't the same as a native 120Hz panel. Check the "native" figure on the spec sheet.
Does Best Buy match Walmart or Target over the holidays?
Best Buy's holiday price match covers its own price drops on products it sells. It excludes Marketplace products. Check its standard price match terms in store before relying on a competitor match.
