3DMakerpro makes handheld 3D scanners: the kind you sweep around an object to turn it into a digital model you can edit, measure or send to a 3D printer. Its US store sells the whole range, from beginner scanners for hobbyists to phase-shifting and LiDAR models aimed at engineers, surveyors and studios. The company lists a Hong Kong address and ships US orders from a US or China warehouse, priced in US dollars.

If you've got a 3D printer and want to copy, repair or customize real objects, or you teach design and want students scanning rather than drawing everything from scratch, this is a store worth knowing about. Every scanner comes with the company's JMStudio software for processing scans, and there's a Geomagic Wrap add-on for heavier editing.

The Fox is the easy entry point: the store describes it as a beginner-friendly medium-format scanner weighing 210g, with 0.07mm accuracy and the same software as the pro models, and it handles objects from 40mm to 1200mm. At the other end, the Raven is a portable LiDAR scanner for mapping rooms, buildings and outdoor sites in color point clouds, with dearer versions that add a second camera or RTK.

In between, the Turtle is a wireless modular scanner where you swap the scanning module depending on the job, the Seal is built for small, detailed things like figurines and precision parts, and the Moose Lite offers markerless tracking at 0.05mm accuracy. The Toucan is the all-in-one phase-shifting model with accuracy of 0.03mm or better and a field of view up to 1000 x 750mm; it was showing as a pre-order when we looked, so check the dispatch date before you buy. Accessories such as the Smart Grip ($299) and turntables are in the accessories collection.

How to save more

• US and Canada orders over $150 ship free, according to the store's shipping policy; below that it's $6.99. Since nearly every scanner is over $150, you'll usually only pay shipping on small accessory orders, so add those to a scanner order instead.
• Check which options you actually need. Several product pages offer bundles with turntables, grips or software at higher prices, and the base scanner may be enough to start.
• Read the warranty and refund policy before buying: most scanners carry a 24-month warranty, but return shipping isn't covered unless the fault is with the scanner, and refunds only apply to orders from the official store.
