hidemy.name is a VPN service that says it has been running for 20 years. It works a little differently from most: there's no account to create. You buy an access code, enter it in the app, and your subscription starts the first time you use it, not when you pay. The site says one code covers up to 5 devices at once, with servers in 42 countries, and there are apps for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS and Linux, plus router setup guides.

It suits people who want a straightforward VPN for public Wi-Fi, streaming while traveling or gaming. Prices are in US dollars, and the site accepts cryptocurrency as well as the usual payment methods.

What's worth a look

Here are the main plans, the free trial and the apps you'll use them with.

The pricing page lists six terms: 1 month at $11, 6 months at $30, 1 year at $48, 2 years at $72, 3 years at $86 and 5 years at $120. That last one works out to $2 a month. Paid plans add open incoming ports, access to PlayStation Network and Xbox Live, and the option to rent a personal IP address at checkout. The site also has free tools, such as a proxy list, a speed test and a DNS leak test.

Setup is simple. Once you have a code, download the app for your device and enter the code. The site walks you through each platform, and it has a WireGuard guide for Linux. Because there's no registration, the site says it doesn't need your personal data, and you can even buy several codes at once and keep them for later. If you want a longer term after activating, you can't extend an active code. Instead you can exchange it for a longer one for an extra fee, or buy a new code when it ends.

Current offers

We don't have a hidemy.name discount code at the moment, and there's no sale on the site right now. The savings it advertises come from length of plan, from 38% off on 6 months to 75% off on 5 years against the monthly price. There's also a free 24-hour trial, and every purchase has a 30-day money-back guarantee.

How to save more

• Try it free first. The 24-hour trial code lets you check speeds from the servers you'll actually use before you pay.
• Buy codes ahead, activate later. A code's time only starts when you first enter it, and the site says there's no limit on how long you can keep one unused. You can buy a longer code now and start it when your current one runs out.
• Pay with PayPal if you might want a refund. The money-back terms say some payment methods' fees are deducted from refunds: 7% for bank cards, for example. PayPal's fee is canceled and WebMoney's is only 0.8%.
