PortraitFlip turns your photos into hand-painted portraits. Upload a picture, choose the medium, size and number of people or pets, and one of its 250-plus artists paints it from scratch. Before anything ships you get a preview by email, can ask for as many changes as you like, and pay the balance only once you're happy. PortraitFlip LLC is based in Newark, Delaware, has been running since 2018 and ships free worldwide.

It's aimed at anyone looking for a personal gift: wedding and anniversary portraits, pet portraits, memorial pieces, or family pictures that combine several photos into one, including relatives who couldn't be in the same shot.

The process is simple. You place an order and upload your photos, a support manager assigns an artist who specializes in your chosen medium, and the painting starts. When it's done you get a photo of it to check, and you can ask for changes such as a different background or adding or removing a person. Once you approve it, the painting is framed if you ordered a frame, and shipped by FedEx Priority or DHL Express. You can also ask for a timelapse video of the artist at work.

What's worth a look

Prices depend on the medium, size and number of subjects. These are the starting prices for six mediums.

The pencil sketch and charcoal drawing both start at $89, and PortraitFlip suggests them for memorial portraits and black-and-white pictures from old photos. For a family or wedding portrait in color, oil painting starts at $149. Specials include royal portraits in Renaissance style, for people or pets.

How to save more

• Choose pencil or charcoal if you're on a budget: they start at $89, against $149 for oil, acrylic or pastel.
• Order early. The regular service takes about 23 days door to door, and Express adds 15% to the painting price to bring that down to about 14 days.
• Use the free revisions at preview stage rather than relying on a return later: once the painting arrives, you have 7 days to ask for a return.
