Real vs artificial Christmas tree in 2026: what each costs and when a fake tree pays for itself

A fresh 6-7 ft Fraser fir costs $84.99 at one garden center this year, while Home Depot is selling 6.5 ft pre-lit artificial trees for $49.98 in its Black Friday event. Here's how the costs add up over the years.

The choice

It's one of the biggest single holiday decorating costs. A real tree is a yearly expense. An artificial tree costs more up front but can last for years. Which one works out cheaper depends on what you pay for each and how long the fake tree lasts.

We looked at prices for 2026 on retailers' own sites and press releases, when we checked on November 1. Big-box fresh tree prices mostly weren't posted yet: Home Depot says its fresh-cut trees arrive in stores in November.

At a glance

  • Artificial: Home Depot's Black Friday Savings Event, November 5 to 25, includes 6.5 ft LED pre-lit artificial trees for $49.98.
  • Real: Platt Hill Nursery, a garden center, lists 2026 fresh-cut Fraser firs at $84.99 for 6-7 ft and $109.99 for 7-8 ft. Balsam firs are cheaper, at $69.99 for 6-7 ft.
  • Break-even: a cheap artificial tree pays for itself in the first year. A $300 one takes about four years against an $85 real tree.
  • Hidden costs: a real tree needs a stand, water and disposal. An artificial one needs storage and eventually replacing.

Real tree prices

Platt Hill Nursery, a garden center, has posted its 2026 fresh-cut prices. A 5-6 ft balsam fir is $54.99 and a 5-6 ft Fraser fir is $69.99. At 6-7 ft, balsam is $69.99 and Fraser is $84.99, or $79.99 for a field-grown Fraser. At 7-8 ft, balsam is $89.99 and Fraser is $109.99. An 8-9 ft Fraser is $149.99. Prices vary a lot by region and seller, so treat these as one real example rather than a national average.

The Real Christmas Tree Board, the industry group, says it doesn't publish an average price, because retailers set their own. Home Depot says its fresh-cut trees arrive in stores in November, and that fresh trees can also be shipped to your door from its website.

Artificial tree prices

Home Depot's Black Friday Savings Event runs November 5 to 25, in store and online. Its October 29 announcement lists 6.5 ft LED pre-lit artificial trees at $49.98, and 100-count LED string lights from $5.98. Lowe's says select pre-lit artificial trees are discounted during Thanksgiving week, but didn't give prices in its announcement. Larger, fuller trees with more lights cost much more, and premium 7.5 ft trees often run to several hundred dollars.

A worked example: years to break even

This is an illustration using the prices above. Your costs will differ.

Say a real tree costs $84.99 a year, plus an assumed $10 a year for disposal or a tree bag, about $95 a year in all. A real-tree stand bought once is left out here, because you'd also keep it for years.

  • $49.98 artificial tree: cheaper from year one. Over five years, it saves about $425 against buying a real tree each year.
  • $150 artificial tree: breaks even in about 1.6 years, so it's ahead from the second Christmas.
  • $300 artificial tree: breaks even in a little over three years ($300 divided by $95). If it lasts ten years, you'd spend $300 instead of about $950.

If you'd buy a balsam fir at $69.99 instead, a $300 artificial tree takes closer to four years to break even. If an artificial tree's lights fail after three seasons and you replace it, the savings shrink.

What to do now

  1. Measure your ceiling and allow for a stand and a topper before choosing a height.
  2. Price the real tree you'd actually buy locally, then multiply by the years you'd keep an artificial one.
  3. Check the light warranty on pre-lit trees, since failed lights are a common reason to replace one.
  4. Buy artificial during sales, like Home Depot's event to November 25, or after Christmas.
  5. For a real tree, ask about disposal. Many cities collect trees in January.

Questions

Are real trees getting more expensive?

The Real Christmas Tree Board's August 2025 survey of wholesale growers found 84% expected no increase in wholesale prices that year. Retail prices are set by sellers and vary.

When do fresh trees arrive in stores?

Home Depot says fresh-cut trees come to stores in November. Platt Hill says its staff are on hand from Saturday, November 21 to December 24.

Is a cheap pre-lit tree worth it?

For a few years, often yes. Cheaper trees tend to have fewer branch tips and lights, so check the specs and reviews.
