Tormek: Swedish kitchen knife sharpeners, now with the T-1 on sale

Tormek is a Swedish company with more than 50 years in sharpening edge tools, and its US online shop focuses on two kitchen machines: the Tormek T-1 Kitchen Knife Sharpener for home cooks and the T-2 Pro for professional kitchens. Both use the same method: set the edge angle, sharpen each side with the knife held in a guide, then deburr and polish on a composite honing wheel. The T-1 adjusts from 8 to 22 degrees, so it handles both Japanese and Western knives. It suits keen home cooks who own decent knives and want them properly sharp without learning to use whetstones.

The machines are made in Lindesberg, Sweden, but the US shop ships from a warehouse in North Carolina, in US dollars. Shipping is free on the T-1 and T-2, and on accessory orders over $100, to the continental US only; Alaska and Hawaii aren't covered. Delivery usually takes 2 to 5 business days after dispatch. There's a 5-year warranty, extended to 8 years when you register online.

What's worth a look

Here are the T-1 color options and a few accessories worth adding.

The T-1 in Carbon Black and the Swedish Red version are the same machine at the same sale price. The Morakniv 1891 edition in Linen White comes with a Swedish utility knife for a little more. The T-2 Pro was listed at $895 but showed as sold out when we checked. For upkeep, the replacement coarse diamond wheel is $182, and an edge marker costs $6.

A few practical notes. The T-1 is a big purchase compared with pull-through sharpeners, so it makes most sense if you have several good knives or cook a lot. The diamond wheel does the sharpening, and the composite honing wheel handles the final polish and quick touch-ups between full sharpenings. Spare parts pages for both the T-1 and T-2 mean you can replace worn parts yourself rather than buying a new machine. The site also has a Hone Your Skills section with sharpening guides.

Current offers

Our current Tormek offer is the T-1 Kitchen Knife Sharpener for $385.20, down from $428. We saw that price on the Carbon Black and Swedish Red models, and the Morakniv 1891 bundle is reduced from $442 to $397.80.

How to save more

• If you'd buy a good utility knife anyway, the Morakniv 1891 edition only costs $12.60 more than the standard T-1 at current prices.
• Group accessory orders to get past $100 for free shipping, or add them to a machine order, which already ships free.
• Register your machine online for the extra 3 years of warranty. Unused products can be returned free within 14 days of delivery: contact Tormek for a return label.
